I don't want this to be a big deal but this blog has reached its end. The reasons are selfish and my own and I don't really feel that I can or really need to explain it.

Fear not, I will still be joining JayT on a weekly basis for Real Men Wear Pink so you can find me there and I'll still be reading, commenting, listening to y'all.

I want to say a huge thanks to everyone I've gotten email from, comments from, chatted with, and met through this...experiment. Today was mostly spent shopping and doing errands while my mom was in town. She's been here many times and has seen everything of note in the city, which is substantial but still limited. Therefore we had a very nice day of reading, talking, cooking, and eating. We also rented some movies.

Earlier in the day my mother was talking about how my brother's partner designed the set for the previously off-broadway - soon to be on broadway production of "Grey Gardens." Brad had seen the documentary some time ago with a group but I decided to stay in that night. My mother had never seen it and was extremely curious about it.

We headed over to Premiere Video, one of the most comprehensive video stores my mother has ever seen which is a feat to accomplish since she is a New Yorker and is impressed by almost nothing outside of the city limits save for parts of Europe. We picked up the movie and also TransAmerica.

TransAmerica was a cute movie, next.

Grey Gardens was PHENOMENAL!

Filmed in 1975, its a documentary about two women, a mother and a daughter, living in an old run down mansion in the hamptons named, Grey Gardens. These aren't just ordinary women, they are the aunt and cousin to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Onassis and once part of New York society. But that is hardly what is extraordinary about them. They have since lost their fortune, lost some of their minds, and are left with only the house, Grey Gardens. The mother and daughter primarily live on the patio of their beach home and in a single bedroom. At one point in the movie one of the many cats living in the house with them is relieving itself behind a portrait of the mother when she was young and bejeweled as a member of the upper echelons of the Hampton set. Her reply to the act, "Well I'm glad somebody is doing what they want around here." As much as their lives appear putrid there is beauty an depth of experience to be had. I can't capture the film in words so all I can say is please rent it and watch it for yourself.

On the drive home from the airport.

Mom: What's down that street?

Me: Oh thats where all the gay bars are! Its really close to where we live so when its not so hot Brad and I just walk to them, its great when we're drunk and we don't have to drive. Pretty much thats where we usually go out.

Mom: Oh it looks like a nice area and its so close to Eatzi's, very nice!

Later that evening sitting in my living room while playing with new binaural microphones for my iRiver.

Mom: What do you use that for?

Me: Nothing. Its nothing. Its just a digital recorder that I have for fun. Its stupid. Its nothing. (I hope she doesn't find my my condensor microphone).

I don't remember it being this hot when I was a kid.

I think being gay is having an adverse effect on my blog popularity. I'm thinking of playing it straight so I can have more mass appeal. I'm in an extremely stable relationship and all but I think if I were perceived as straight to pre pubescent girls I think I could really make something of myself. If you were in my position you'd do the same thing right? I can always have the gay thing to fall back on if it doesn't work out.

What they are afraid of more than anything is the march will happen in Jerusalem and that NOTHING catastrophic will occur. Fire and brimstone won't fall from the sky destroying the sodomites and everyone might actually have fun! That would lend credence to the argument that there is no god and that all of the "rules" that are supposedly god's will are made up by a handful hateful men who want to control the minds of the masses.

The solution for them? Sanction violence against and even the murder of people for the glory and honor of god. And because they are performing what they consider god's will that pesky commandment of "thou shalt not kill" doesn't apply. Same old story since the dawn of Abrahamic religion.

Gomo is a term that Alden from Secret Simon introduced me to not long ago. It's a portmanteau, combining the "G" of geek and the "omo" of homo. Gomo.

Well just how gomo do you think I can be? Let me tell you.

One of the perks, as I see it, in working in a research institute is very often one can donate their blood for research (those of us that donate are considered the "healthy donor" controls) at the rate of $10 a tube, a maximum of 4 tubes per donation per day. The institute is a cornucopia of races and nationalities which is good for control samples because it accounts for a lot of the background noise in the general human population. Some people donate more than others and often times are turned down for donation. However, I, as a white male from the US, am a minority in my work place and am always welcome to donate blood and I like to max out my contribution.

So what do I purchase after I've transmuted my liquid life into liquid cash?

Looks like this was the wrong course (told ya so!), and what was that bit about the culture of life?

I'm going to take an optimistic stance and say that all is not completely lost and use this as a learning experience. Its not hard now to educate people that unilateralism is not good foreign policy and just because you think he's a "good guy" doesn't mean he'd make a good president. We need to get some real representation in congress in the fall and then we need to make sure that we select someone who has minimum qualifications for the presidency, preferably someone with success in previous jobs would help too. Furthermore, from now on if I hear the conservatives and republicans spinning their "We have solutions and thats why people vote for us" rhetoric I'm going to refer them to the above image.

I Liked It

I really liked Superman Returns. Good action scenes. The pace was excellent. Brandon Routh is an excellent homage to Christopher Reeves and is a dream boat when he's in that uniform. There's something about that fresh face, slick back hair, and that rogue curl that is so hypnotic. Also, I forgot and love how Superman gives helpful tips and tidbits of info after saving the day and that he's solar powered. All in all I was entertained greatly by this installment in the franchise and was pleased by the use of iconic Superman movie elements from the previous movies.

My only issues with the movie was that Bosworth (Lois Lane) is no Margot Kidder, her performance could have been easily substituted by a computer rendition of Kidder from 1978 and would have been better. Someone should have looked for her on MySpace to see if she was available to just do the part. Also, Parker Posey was not utilized correctly both by the writing and the direction.

I don't understand why many of the critiques I've read after seeing the movie insist that the original movie was some untouchable work of art and that Returns is some kind of cheap imitation. Returns is an entertaining comic book gone to the silver screen movie, just as the original was. I couldn't help but guffaw at reading criticisms that the original music was used in the new movie. John Williams' music has made many movies and Superman is no exception to that rule. "Can You Read My Mind" is a classic movie song and flying through the sky with Lois and the man of steel wouldn't be the same without it. Would you have the asteroid scene from The Empire Strikes Back redone with new music when that movie gets re-released on DVD for the umpteenth (spell check recognizes "umpteenth" as a word) time? Some of the reviewers that are writing couldn't have been more than eight years old when they saw the first movie and I think that perhaps they need to revisit the original with an adult eye and sans Superman underoos (underoos is not included in the spell check dictionary).

A Classic Never Dies

I want to podcast but my host says I only have 16 megabytes available until older episodes get archived, hardly enough for a proper podcast. That will have to wait.

Last night Brad and I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's. Unlike many gay men it is not my favorite movie but it is one of those movies, for me, that I can watch over and over again without growing tired of it. Additionally, its a movie where every time I watch it I seem to notice something that I never saw or heard before in it. Last night I made these observations.

Holly's couch is not a mid-century modern leucite concoction but instead a claw foot tub with one side removed. I can't believe I never noticed that.

The scene, to be more precise the instant where Holly, Paul, and Mrs. Failenson meet is brilliantly acted by all three players. They all cast gazes at each other that express an instant mutual understanding, as if they'd all met before.

Now I could be totally off the mark on this one but I think I am correct in thinking that the woman, Irving, that OJ speaks to early on at Holly's party is a trannie. First there is the name Irving itself but there is also the following discussion that OJ has with Paul about whether or not "she's real." I believe the ambiguity of who the she is is initially vague on purpose before it becomes clear that OJ is asking Paul about Holly.

In line with the previous item I just noticed the overall theme of authenticity. Authenticity of self and of love. For example the Tiffany's jeweler is captivated by the Cracker Jack ring in spite of the fact that he's surrounded by some of the most spectacular jewels in the world. The Cracker Jack ring is more authentic to him because it carries more meaning; far more valuable than than a sterling silver telephone dialer, even if it is from Tiffany's.

Some may have already noticed these things but this is my first time and it makes watching the movie over and over again worth it. Perhaps I should read the book.

New Look, New Grill, and A Movie

Wow! Look at that sexy new banner at the top of my blog! Isn't it beautiful!? A big sloppy wet kissed thank you to VJ from VJ Net for designing this banner and my new podcast artwork.

I absolutely love them with every fiber of my being, they are the best gifts a blogger/podcaster could ever receive. VJ is quite talented with the graphic design and also taught me the neato method of taking pictures of people with a special flash so its all trippy looking. He has tons of cool pics on his blog so go check his part f the internets out and check out his podcast too. Thanks again VJ!

My three day vacation from my vacation is over and I'm headed back to work tomorrow. I have a love-hate relationship with the feelings that I have after a huge amount of time off work that included a festive event that afforded me much euphoria. This feeling typically happens after the holiday season and the anticlimactic New Year hullaballoo; the crashing halt and inertial melancholy inevitably follows. I liken the sensation to stuffing yourself with your favorite food even though you're full, the pain is intense but you can't help it and you continue to gorge yourself. Has anyone figured out the technology for inertial damping yet (thats a geeky Star Trek reference that I'm sure Atari will get).

In any case, its been a splendid few days off. My parents bought Brad and I a grill and it was here when we returned home. My first day home was spent shopping for things to grill and then assembling my new toy. Its the Weber Q (isn't that just utterly appropriate) and it has my stamp of approval as well as Mondo Rick-o's as well. I highly recommend this grill for anyone who as a limited amount space and/or wants a grill that is good for home or travel (the grill comes out of the stand and can be taken with on camping trips and accommodates a small propane tank).

I also spent a nominal amount of time throwing some photos together into a photo movie. I have the iLife '06 suite of apps for the Mac so I figured that I'd actually use some the capabilities that Mac apps are famed for. I had uploaded the video to Google video and wanted to be slick and embed it into the blog post itself but that was an utter bust so click on the image of the movie and you can watch and download the movie.

Trite But True

Sometimes you go to a place and you leave a piece of your heart there. This happens because of the inherent beauty of place, the streets, the sounds, the smells, the sights, and even the id that results from all of those aspects. If you're fortunate enough you can share this experience with others that are visiting and it can serve as a context for the forging of friendships. If you're even more fortunate you're able to meet people that live in that place and forge friendships with them as well.

I had been to San Francisco many times before last week but never really dove into the city like I did this time. Nor have I experienced the pangs of withdrawal after having left the city and returning home. Thats when you know you're in love, when it hurts to say goodbye.

My experience this time went beyond the notion of Pride and beyond the simplistic idea of a vacation. It was an adventure that I will remember forever and I will never forget my phenomenal week I had with the city itself, others who traveled from around the nation to be there, and especially those who lived there and welcomed their guests like old friends although they were meeting many of them for the first time.

No matter how trite it may sound, its all too true to say, I left my heart in San Francisco.

This comment (in italics) was left on my blog in regards to my statement saying I was going to see An Inconvenient Truth. My response is in bold.

While it is clear to me that humans are contributing to a rise in global temperatures it is definitely not clear that they are the main factor. The earth cools, the earth warms...the species that survive adapt.

John, it says in your profile that you're in manufacturing. That is a fine profession but I don't see anywhere else that says that you dabble in meteorology, geology, or evolutionary theory. Therefore, I don't know how you can make such a claim with such bravado. Where is your data? What are your theories on what IS the main factor? If we are contributing wouldn't an adaptation be to stop contributing to the CO2 thats causing the problem so we can survive? 

 Al Gore, in addition to inventing the internet, is a total boob. (disclaimer, I haven't seen the movie, maybe its ok, but i'm skeptical).

Ad Hominem argument. Please omit next time and bring facts that are relevant to the issue and not attacks on the person presenting them.

While I'm sure he is well meaning I'm also sure that he lacks a fundamental understanding of the climate and our impact on it. He knows what he's been told, and unfortunately he surrounds himself with do-gooder environmentalists that would apparently prefer to sit in the dark and walk to work.

What makes you "sure" that Gore lacks the understanding? Are you in the field? Al Gore has been spearheading awareness of global warming for many years. He has surrounded himself with scientific data and professionals in the field who are taking measurements. Scientists have an obligation to report measurements as they see them and over 928 peer reviewed articles in scientific journals over ten years (1993-2003) (Beyond The Ivory Tower: The Scientific Consensus on Climate Change) all come to the same conclusion that CO2 levels are rising at a more rapid pace than at any other time in the past 600k years and that the climate is changing in a manner that is not consistent for the cycles in the past 600k years. May I remind you that when you don't have a planet to live on you can't sit in the light or drive your car to work.

They offer no workable options (mostly because there aren't any!) but they insist that we "ACT NOW".

Please see the movie or go to climatecrisis.net. There are several workable options that we as individuals can do to stop and even reverse the effects of global warming.

Me-thinks he needs to talk to some people that actual understand energy, global variations in temperature and what alternatives are viable on a truely global scale. Until he does that I think I'll pass on spending my 8 bucks on his movie.

Again, Gore has been tracking this issue since he was a college student, he cites scientific data, and being that he was Vice President he's had experience meeting with energy officials in the past. Not to mention he dedicated much of his senate career to this issue as well. Your Ad Hominem argument of Al Gore being a "boob" doesn't hold water so please I encourage you to write Al Gore to tell him who he should be talking to. I think individual adjustsments in how each person can live are viable on a global scale. Furthermore the rest of the developed world has signed The Kyoto treaty and are dedicated to fighting global warming and reducing CO2 emissions. The US is one of two nations, Australia being the other, to not sign it. Furthermore, fuel efficiency standards for vehicles are significantly higher in other nations compared to the US. This would suggest that the globe already has thought of and acted on viable solutions.

Look people, its good to be skeptical but NOT BEFORE YOU SEE THE DATA. Watch the movie, learn the data, and then address the issue, not the messenger.

Its amazing what a good nights sleep can do. Yesterday I was feeling bleah on all sorts of levels. I realize now that it was mostly because the previous night was spent tossing and turning in bed trying to find that comfortable spot in the bed and in my mind. I realize during the day yesterday that I had to take a break from everything and just sit back and relax on the couch and watch a movie. No blogs, no news, no podcasting, just some good old fashioned mental masturbation.

After Brad made a delicious dinner of vegetarian shepherds pie we settled in to watch one of the many movies occupying our TiVo. The choices were many but we settled on Starship Troopers. I had heard the movie was a completely retarded and it sounded deliciously idiotic. After all the director, Paul Verhoeven, brought us the classics Basic Instinct and Showgirls so this movie was bound to be a hit with a couple of 'mos. Furthermore how deep could a movie with the never quite actualized Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards be?

Most entertaining indeed.

In the future earth is controlled by a fascist military government where one is only a citizen after serving in the military because only those who put themselves between the state and the desolation of war are the ones who truly love the republic.

Light years away on the opposite side of the galaxy a non-human, bug-like race exists and apparently cause a threat to humanity although that threat is unclear.

Meteor hits earth, destroys Buenos Aries. Bugs are blamed for hurdling the meteor at earth although the connection is loose at best. Humans launch a full out assault on the bugs to exterminate them for the good of humanity.

Bugs turn out to be more sophisticated than humans thought. Military intelligence turned out to be faulty. WOOPS. 300,000 humans die in the first attempt to invade and exterminate bugs from one of their planets.

Commercials shown that paint war as something great. For example: Commercials of kids stomping on bugs while mother watches with maniacal glee at the children stomping on madagascar hissing roaches. For example: Commercials showing how civilians can kill the bugs quickly in the event of an infestation.

Some characters in the movie argue that perhaps the bugs have a collective consciousness and that we should try and understand them in our efforts to defeat them. Notion is quickly shot down and state scientists insists the bugs are just ~~evildoers~~ pests and must be exterminated for the good of humanity.

Main character is a soulless youth who joins the military for all the wrong reasons, never has an original thought in his head, and follows orders from his superiors and female love interests with the alacrity of a puppy dog. He quickly moves up the ranks although he lacks any kind of talent except for the fact that everyone likes him.

Lieutenant / former high school teacher of the main characters states in the beginning of the movie that the social scientists of the twentieth century were responsible for the downfall of mankind and the military is the saving grace of humanity. Also states that the only way any issue truly gets solved is through violence.

It was nice to escape for a night.

Cheers to my parents! June 4th is their anniversary and they have been married for 46 years.

They've been incredible parents: strong, loving, stern, involved, devoted, exemplary. They have supported me in everything that I do and although I may not have always thought so, have always had my health and happiness as their number one priority. Additionally they have shown me that enduring relationships will encounter many hurdles and that love is an action in addition to an emotion. I only wish that everyone could be so fortunate to have parents like mine, parents that love their children and one another with reckless abandon. Happy anniversary mom and dad.

Are We Just a Bunch of Sisyphuses?

I was listening to Lucky Bitch Radio yesterday and Wanda had as her guest, Lady Bunny. Now I have heard of Lady Bunny, seen the pictures and the various and sundry video clips of this famed drag queen and was expecting something similar.

I was bowled over. Not only is this drag queen deliciously raunchy, indulgent, and tragically fabulous but she is also eloquent and very well read when it comes to current events, analyses of popular culture, and the decline of western civilization, but I digress.

During the podcast the topic of 9/11 came up. I know right, groan groan how many times do we have to discuss that day? Hasn't everything already been said? Well, maybe not. Lady Bunny brought up a question that I have had in my head for a very long time but have never vocalized for reasons of being labeled as a sympathizer with the terrorists, but who am I to care about labels, especially when the couldn't be further from the truth.

So here's the question, the million dollar question that no one seems to want to ask and yet the answer to could possibly hold so many solutions to our current predicament. The question that I think was hastily overlooked and cast aside and replaced with a vicious streak of vengeful bloodlust. A question that I myself overlooked to embrace my carnal desire to seek revenge on those who attacked us but lingered in my head from the start of all of this:

Humans are to a certain extent capable of senseless acts of violence but I have to believe that we have some shred of good left in us as a species, that we do not go around killing people for no reason. With that in mind we have to ask ourselves, as a nation, what did we do to these people to motivate them to want to kill us?

Terrorism is unlike conventional warfare in that it isn't really about land or technological superiority so its almost a distillation of what is at the core of all war, ideology. So why aren't we using our heads as weapons? To write off terrorists as "evildoers" doesn't answer the question, its simply a distraction. One the best teachers I ever had would incessantly yell at us in analytical literature class, "Don't tell me what! Tell me WHY!" You can kill people all you like, but ideas and reasons are beyond bodies and can't be destroyed by bullets and bombs. If we fail to realize that then all of this will happen again and we'll be trapped in a Sisyphean cycle, pushing that boulder up the hill only to have it roll back down again. It would do us more good to use our resources to find and treat the cause of this problem rather than waste time and lives treating the symptoms.

Houston Photos Part 2

After touring the campus of Rice we decided to head over to a shopping center that was close by to find something to eat. In our exploration we stumbled upon Chloe Dao's boutique, Lot 8.

Eventually we spotted Kahn's, a local jewish deli. We had no knowledge of this establishment but it was such a happy accident that we stumbled onto this place. We had the best hot pastrami sandwiches I have ever had besides Katz's. A hot pastrami sandwich is best accompanied by a Dr. Pepper made with real Imperial Sugar cane sugar, not the kind with the corn syrup, YUCK.

We sat outside and ate our lunch watching the really pretty clouds coming up from the gulf.

After lunch we headed over to the galleria area of Houston. This is where Williams Tower is located and I found my new favorite skyscraper. Skyscrapers are a bit of an obsession of mine and I just love love love Williams tower for the fact that it has an art deco style and is yet still ultra modern. Add it to the list of reasons why I think Philip Johnson was a terrific architect.

Around the galleria area the streets labels are on giant chrome rings suspended over the intersection. Additionally all of the lamp and traffic light posts are chrome and it makes for a very clean, space-like environment, quite suiting for Houston.

At 901 feet (about as tall as the Chrysler building) the Williams tower is by some standards the tallest building in the world that is not in a "central business district." I hope you enjoyed that useless fact. I did.

At the base of Williams tower is another reason to love Philip Johnson, The Water Wall.

After the photo buffet at Williams tower Brad took us to The Beer Can House. This house was owned by an old man who basically covered it in old beer cans. He died and the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art has taken it over and are working to restore it.

I love repetition of ordinary elements in design and the fence captivated me.

There's a Bookstop that is in an old movie theatre. I love when buildings get repurposed and I applaud large companies when they do this rather than building new big box stores. In any case the murals inside the old theatre were restored and were quite impressive. Here's the ceiling.

I love House of Pies, aka House of Guys. This is an old 24 hour diner and I love it because the pie is excellent, the decor hasn't changed since it was built, and the waitresses wear uniforms and are super friendly and call everyone "sugar" and "hon." I highly recommend it whether drunk and in need of some sobering late night food or just because you need that slice of pie.

Houston Photos Part 1

Our trip to Houston was great. Its so delightful to leave your familiar surroundings for a couple of days and hit reset and it's something that Brad and I have to do more of. The only issue is that we live in the galaxy of Texas on Planet Dallas and the the only other planets worth visiting are light years away. In any case we headed out of Dallas on Friday to Houston.

There isn't much south of Dallas on I-45. This Whataburger in Ennis was pretty much the last thing until Hunstville, thats where they have the prison and execute lots of people.

As you get closer to Houston its quite clear that Texas has piney forests. I was pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed the setting sun through the trees at this rest area.

We got into Houston at around nine on Friday, checked in and drove around some to get our bearings on the city. After some exploration we crashed in our room.

Also, Houston has many parks, the largest being the foresty Memorial Park, and people use them. It was quite shocked to see people out given how humid it was but was pleased that the city parks were being used. The park in foreground is along the Buffalo Bayou.

After viewing the Body Worlds 3 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science with the lovely Mikey Pod, we headed over to Brad's alma mater of Rice University.

I love the style of the architecture at Rice, its mediterranean but has the perftec touch of whimsy. The campus is shockingly insulated from the city and seems like the perfect place for the pursuit of academics.

All of the capitals of the columns on the main quad at Rice have ornate reliefs on them. Each one of them features what I believe are prominent figures in academics. My guess is that this one is Plato or JoeMyGod.

On the campus of Rice is the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, so named after the 61st Secretary of State. Because I am a history nerd and I had to take a picture next to this piece of the Berlin Wall that sits outside the institute.

Thats enough photos for now but I promise I have more to show you and I am also going to share my thoughts on Houston, Body Worlds 3, and the trip in general in my next podcast. More to come real soon.

Well its the end of an era. Will & Grace, or as I like to call it Two Women and Their Eunuch Clowns, is over. Well maybe now gay people will reclaim their edge and go retreat to being a fringe group instead of everyone's favorite Thursday night freak show.

Now that this sickly sweet sugar coated neuter festival has been put to bed, so long as you don't channel surf over to Lifetime (now I'm really going to have to get the Golden Girls on DVD), I'm ready to welcome back the mythical days I've heard about from Joe My God and The Farmboyz. The days where being gay was about being yourself with no regrets and not playing into ambiguous hetero-normative roles for the enjoyment and approval of "The Heartland."

Fuck the heartland. I'm fucking tired of playing to the middle, playing it safe and the portrayals in mainstream media that go along with that. If you don't like us or how we live our lives then you don't have to talk to us, you don't have to watch our television, you don't have to buy our clothes, you don't have to buy our shoes, we'll stop designing your homes, you don't have to have us plan your weddings, mitzvahs, sweet sixteens, and all the other fabulous bullshit in your life that makes you feel special. You want us to amuse you? Then you get everything that comes with it.

My whole life I've been subject to the images of man and woman doing all the things that they do normally in life on television and in film. They kiss, hold hands, date, marry, divorce, fuck and its all okay because as long as the story ends with a penis going into a vagina it's a go! To think that that a whole generation of young queers had to grow up with this muppet show as some kind of example of what it is to be gay is sickening. So I hope everyone got a good laugh out of the Eunuchs cause I think its time we changed channels and returned to our regularly scheduled selves replete with snark, sexuality, sensuality, obscenity, fabulousness, excess, self loving, self loathing, self denial, pain, joy, life, death, living with no regret or veils as to who we are, and most of all refusing to play into YOUR version of OUR lives.

So I raise my virtual blogging glass of champagne and say goodye to this craptastic series and...Sean Hayes, you suck.

Wii!!

I have to say I heart the new Nintendo Wii (pronounced "wee") which is making a huge splash after premiering at the E3 convention this week. I don't think I've ever been so excited about a game console like this since the Sega Genesis.

Nintendo is taking a completely different tack with this console in confront of Sony's PS3 and XBox360. Instead of focusing on graphics this system is all about innovation in game play. I'm so glad that Nintendo is doing this because quite honestly I'm not all that dazzled by super-duper graphics, especially when the game is boring. I find that I prefer games that are fun, easy to pick up and play on the fly, and don't require that I invest six months of my life to complete.

The best part about the Wii is the wireless controller that responds to all kinds of movement. Watch the video to see how fun the games look! And if that wasn't enough the Wii comes with WiFi built in and you'll be able to access all of the previous Nintendo titles and some Genesis titles from the web and play them on he Wii! I'm so excited for christmas now!

Turns out the story, which Brad found, related to my previous blog post has been noticed by The Huffington Post and Think Progress.

Turns out that the housing secretary's conduct was in violation of federal law, 48 CFR 3.101-1:

Government business shall be conducted in a manner above reproach and, except as authorized by statute or regulation, with complete impartiality and with preferential treatment for none. Transactions relating to the expenditure of public funds require the highest degree of public trust and an impeccable standard of conduct.

Alas, I'm sure that document will be shredded as soon as possible and the remains, along with the shredded remains of the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, will be used to fill the bean bag chairs that are being made for the Bush library.

I believe the nomination of General Hayden to head the CIA is the precursor to a federal police organization not too dissimilar to the Nazi SS or the German Democratic Republic's (East Germany) Stasi, aka Ministry for State Security. Because spying on your countrymen is patriotic! War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.

Hud Secretary's blunt warning

Brad found this article in the Dallas Business Journal and its actually quite disturbing. I urge all of you to go and read the article and spread it on your blogs or through email (to your Senators and Representatives specifically) because its a fine example of how the current administration is steeped in cronyism and is on the fast track to making this a fascist nation.

In brief, Alphonso Jackson, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was relating an anecdote at a Dallas Housing Authority forum.

"He had made every effort to get a contract with HUD for 10 years," Jackson said of the prospective contractor. "He made a heck of a proposal and was on the (General Services Administration) list, so we selected him. He came to see me and thank me for selecting him. Then he said something ... he said, 'I have a problem with your president.'

"I said, 'What do you mean?' He said, 'I don't like President Bush.' I thought to myself, 'Brother, you have a disconnect -- the president is elected, I was selected. You wouldn't be getting the contract unless I was sitting here. If you have a problem with the president, don't tell the secretary.'

"He didn't get the contract," Jackson continued. "Why should I reward someone who doesn't like the president, so they can use funds to try to campaign against the president? Logic says they don't get the contract. That's the way I believe."

This is utter bullshit. To deny someone a contract simply based on their political views is wrong. The contractor who told Jackson his views was exercising his right to speak freely about the president and should not have been denied a contract for doing such.

Why is this so wrong? Imagine a country where the National Institutes of Health, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The National Science Foundation, The Environmental Protection Agency, The Center for Disease Control, The Federal Bureau of Investigation, The Central Intelligence Agency etc. so forth and so on only granted money to, protected, and hired people who not only implicitly supported the president but also refused to deal with anyone that outwardly spoke against the president? That is totalitarianism, not democracy. These agencies exist to extend opportunity to those who are in need and to protect the citizenry. They do not exist to reward only those who are loyal to the president and penalize those who disagree with him.

Cereal Box Redux

I've commented before on cereal boxes and the marketing messages the maker of these cereals try to convey to the consumer. Well it so happened that again I was struck at the idiocy of advertising and how it really must be that the majority of the people in the industry have never understood what editing is or what focus groups are.

Take this cereal box for example:

Clearly this is an attempt at cross-promotion but upon casting my visage on this cereal box I could not help but be whisked away to my youth in kindergarten. Workbook exercises were a regularity in those days and many times they involved being shown pictures of various objects and being asked which one doesn't belong. Smily happy sun man does not belong with angry oversized gorilla. Note to the Madison Avenue Kellogg's ad execs: this image is disturbing and makes me NOT want to buy Raisin Bran.

The media is ignoring this according to The Raw Story which points out that the New York Times article on the White House Press Correspondent dinner fails to make ANY mention of Stephen Colbert's withering presentation that lampoons not only the president but more importantly the media themselves.

After the Nasher we headed next door to the Dallas Museum of Art to see the Maya Kingship exhibit. It was good but no photography allowed. I really want to get to reading the book 1491 after seeing the exhibit. Its amazing how advanced and rich the Mayan and all of the native American cultures were pre-Coloumbus. After we ambled through the exhibit I found a friend in the gift shop.

How far would you go to keep your job? Well the man that washes the windows on my building at work is pretty damn dedicated.

Last night we had a very violent thunderstorm and there are pendulous dark clouds still in the sky. Here is the weather report for Dallas today:

Now it is pretty certain that its going to rain again today and the windows will just get dirty again. Not only that but the man who was washing the windows was standing on an aluminum ladder on the outside of a midrise building on a day when lightening could strike at any minute.

This man was also hispanic.

The Gilded Frame of The Upper Class

Upon watching CNN today at the gym while doing my cardio I remembered why I don't watch or read mainstream media anymore.

The media has evolved in a manner such that they frame all white upper middle class peoples as victims of terrible circumstance if anything unsavory happens to them. Its like watching a film noir movie where you're on the side of the main character in spite of their blatant shortcomings and defects that got them into trouble in the first place.

For example, Natalee Holloway. This girl has been missing for I don't know how long now but CNN is obsessed with her story. I wrote a blog post on the obscene amount of coverage on her disappearance some time ago, specifically the indulgent discussion of it on the insipid Nancy Grace show. What is so special about this girl really? She went to Aruba and she got involved with some unsavory people due to her own naivete. As a result she's probably at the bottom of he caribbean right now and I'm sure her skeleton is making a very nice scaffold for new coral development. All tasteless humor aside, why, given all the Americans that go missing every year while on holiday, is she so important? The only reason why anyone cares about her story is because she's white, blonde, christian, and upper middle class. She could be be the daughter of any one of the people in this country that really matter; you know, the white, upper middle class, christian people.

The bottom line is that when terrible things happen to anybody who doesn't fit into those categories its just not the same, somehow the media feels like its not so important. Why? Racism and classism.

Now on CNN they have new young victims of circumstance, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann the two Duke University students accused of kidnapping and raping a 27 year old black woman. Now I don't normally add qualifiers such as "black" when describing people because usually its not relevant but in this case is an exception and the race of the alleged victim is relevant.

While at the gym I noticed some things about CNN's coverage of this story and after reading several articles from the mainstream media I see these issues echoed. Number one, the accused are not referred to as Duke University students, except here in this blog, but as Duke lacrosse players. Now why would you do that? Is it really important to the issue that we be reminded that these two are lacrosse players over and over again? This a way of humanizing the accused, making them seem just like everybody else; you know all those other white, upper middle class, young men who can never do wrong and play lacrosse.

The other thing that I noticed, specifically on CNN, is that the accused high school coaches were attesting the moral character of these young men but in terms of sports metaphor. One coach went on record saying something to the affect that one of the boys was a reliable team member and you could always count on him in a clutch. Okay thanks for letting me know that the next time I'm on the lacrosse field I can count on this young man to make the goal for me. I guess I can overlook that he's been accused of rape now. Case closed!

Furthermore CNN continuously showed establishing footage of the neighborhoods where these boys were from. Neighborhoods with large homes and green lawns. Neighborhoods of the white and privileged where rapists couldn't possibly be bred. I mean how could a young white man who has gotten everything he's ever wanted or asked for since he was born ever be capable of rape? Its just not possible, the suburbs are safe and pure and good. White collar crime is one thing but white suburbanites couldn't possibly commit rape, let alone the rape of a black woman. Obviously there has been a mix up.

I know that our legal system is such that you are innocent until proven guilty in this country and I know that what happened to Natalee Holloway was indeed a tragedy for her family and friends. What I seek to underline here is the gilded framing that the mainstream media puts on situations that involve white, upper middle class individuals. Ask yourself the last time you saw a black man convicted of rape ever painted as a victim of circumstance. Think of a time when you've ever seen a news report that even entertained the idea that a black man accused of raping a white woman was a victim of circumstance. Consider how many black women probably go missing every day and we don't hear about it. Consider how many gay people are harassed, beat up, killed every day and we don't hear about it. Well to be fair and balanced these stories are mentioned, on local news stations, briefly, before the sports cast comes on.

Dallas in Full Bloom

All across the world today people are celebrating the pagan springtime ritual. Some look for decorated eggs hidden in the grass, others gorge themselves on chocolate and jelly beans, and some gorge themselves on eggs benedict and mimosas.

Here in Dallas the tradition for the past twenty or so years has been one that is steeped in dignity and in the true keeping with the springtime rite, The Pooch Parade.

The parade is held in Lee Park here in Dallas so named after General Robert E. Lee. Here he is with his gay lover riding on their horses.

It was a lovely day in Lee Park.

Even Jesus showed up.

Here is our first pooch. For those of you that haven't already figured it out, the pooch parade is basically an excuse for gay men to dress themselves and their dogs up in fabulously excessive garb. Its kinda like pride here in Dallas only far more outrageous, has more children, and there are straight people acting like fools too! I love it.

This lovely collie was dressed as Genie. Dog people have a lot of time on their hands. They're almost as bad as bloggers.

The parade is about to start and everyone was sweating with anticipation...actually it was just hot as hell.

This lady had her pom in a sailor's suit and in a wagon dressed up like a ship he was also accompanied by some stuffed animal sailors as well. Now I don't know if she was being tongue and cheek but the back of the wagon reads "Lotta Seamen."

This was one of the last in the parade and by far one of my favorites. You GO Gurl!! I couldn't tell if the dog or the owner was "Princess Cupcake" though.

See now everybody Texas has lotsa out and proud freaks too and even though we're a red state. Now if we can only get people to get as enthusiastic about getting the bastard asses who are in power out of office as they are about dressing up their dogs we'll be set. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'.

You Owe Us, Bigtime, Friday

I don't know what's so good about it. Its the day that is the crux of catholic guilt and thus the most brilliant marketing campaign in human history. This is the day that a man who you didn't know died so that you can be absolved of sins that you commit without even knowing it so that you can live forever after you die. Feel guilty, feel very very guilty and leave a donation please.

I used to have the brain fog myself and if you could travel back in time to my adolescent years you would find a young Adam sobbing in front of a piece of wood that ironically means salvation for millions but really is, and was, an instrument of cruel and unusual punishment.

Anyway, most people take this day off but my present employer doesn't give the day off which is convenient. In previous years I've come to work even when everyone else was absent. I couldn't, in good conscience, be absent from work on a day that meant nothing for me so instead I asked that the hours be comped and that I just use the time for another day.

Glaring Omission

Last night on American Idol the slaves performed songs from Queen. As is tradition the show started with a vignette paying homage to the featured artist of the week. Naturally when one speaks of Queen really one is speaking of the outrageous, the talented, the captivating, the flamboyant Freddy Mercury. Obviously Freddy is no longer with the band therefore, I found it odd that they neglected to mention how Freddy Mercury died.

I'll say it here for those that don't know, he died from complications due to AIDS.

Baking Again

Well I cannot help myself. Every time I bake something from the Martha Stewart cookbook I got for christmas it comes out so well I have to share it with all of you. In fact I'm so pleased with my confections that I wish you could all have a sample.

First there were the Pignoli Cookies.

Then there were the Lemon Madeleines.

But I think I've hit the jackpot with the particular recipe, oatmeal raisin cookies. A simple cookie, downright trite one might say, but this recipe is so good. I don't care what Donald Trump or others say, Martha is a genius. When push comes to shove someone who brings joy to my life via food is far more impressive than someone who pollutes manhattan and other cities with gaudy sckyscrapers.

What different about this recipe from oatmeal raisin cookies I've made in the past? Well this recipe uses shredded coconut and 1/3 of grade B maple syrup. Martha says grade B is better because it has a deeper flavor than grade A. I trust her and the cookies are fabulous!

Oh, also, I don't normally do this but this man was so exceptionally hot that I have to. Who is the man that played Tony Soprano's new driver on The Soprano's last night? He was so hot it hurt to look at him and I was raised catholic so I need to inflict more pain on myself by looking at more pictures of him. So, If anyone wouldn't mind sending them my way I'd appreciate it.

Guilty Indulgences

This evening I listened to the radio. Specifically I listened to the "Mix" station here in Dallas which consists largely of songs from the late 80s and early 90s strung together in a continuous mix. Being that I am alone I couldn't help but sing along and dance in my living room to Milli Vanilli, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Kris Kross.

Now I will go and enjoy my third ice cream sandwich of the day.

Stay Up Late to See Something Odd

Quite frankly I don't see what the big fuss about all this is. I got so many emails about it. Time was created by man, its not like this is a natural phenomenon. So someone decided a long time ago that everyone, with the exception of some cultures, will read left to right. Then many many years later someone decided that time can be represented numerically. The next step was that the numerical chronological stamps would be time followed by date. Ooookay so naturally we could see this one from a mile away. Any child that knows how to count could have observed this so why is it that people are getting so excited?

You know what makes me ooh and ahh? That in a right triangle, no matter where you are, the sum of the distance of each leg squared equals the distance of the hypotenuse. To make this even more amazing this theorem was proven by a man named Pythagoras in ancient Greece.

Here's another one. As long as an object isn't approaching the speed of light (special relativity theory), its force is equal to the mass of the object times its acceleration. F=ma. It always works and it was elucidated by Sir Issac Newton during the renaissance. Thats fucking amazing to me.

You know what's also amazing to me? That every living organism on this planet is encoded for using the same digital code, composed of the four bases A, G, C, and T and that scrambling those four digits in different ways makes all of the life that is currently on this planet. This discovery, perhaps one of the most profound discoveries of the 20th century, was made by the concerted efforts of Rosalind Franklin (I put her name first because she really found it first), Watson, Crick, Avery, McLeod, and McCarty. Thats fucking amazing!

I know this post is horribly erudite but I find it really depressing that people are mystified that at an insignificant moment, on an insignificant day, on an insignificant year, on an insignificant planet, the time will read 01:02:03 04/05/06. There is so much more happening in and around us for us to be in awe of. If people would only take the same amount of time to step back look at it and reflect on it as much as they are this phenomenon it would be something awesome in itself.

Observations From The Mall

Today was quite delightful. We woke up, went to the gym, and then headed out for a day of commercialism.

We rarely go out to the mall. In fact, if it were up to me I'd like to just have my clothes regenerate themselves when they got worn down and or magically resize themselves after I gain or lose weight. Being that we don't have that technology yet I was forced to buy new clothes. It wasn't so bad, I had some gift cards from christmas that needed to be put to use.

Because we rarely visit the mall its always a treat when we do go. I get to see all the kinds of people that I usually avoid, specifically people that breed and like to fill their lives with lots and lots of things they don't ever use. I love to see how they get so excited about items that they never knew they needed.

We also had a nice dose of young, just-turned-legal male eye candy. Thats always welcome. Unfortunately I cannot help but think that one day they will become breeders themselves but their fascination for useless items will not fade. Oh the potential of youth and how its squandered on the young.

There was also our dose of hot married men eye candy. Dallas seems to have more than any other city that I've lived in or visited. It amazes me when I see these specimens. We live in such a male dominated society and women have such low self esteem, overall, that there just doesn't seem to be any pressure for men to keep themselves in shape after they have coupled. The expectations for the post marital male are so much lower than that of the post marital woman. I mean can you imagine if the average run of the mill housewife told her fat husband to get to the gym and get hot or to just cut to the chase and get pec implants? Occasionally though there are those that keep themselves in tip top shape. I can only guess they keep themselves pretty out of a desire to be desired. In any case I'm more than happy to assuage them by casting furtive glances their direction.

Overall though when I go to the mall it amazes me how much shit gets produced for people to consume. I wonder what happens to most of it. It can't all get bought up. Where does it go after its had its time in the market? Does the factory worker in China ever think that the product they worked so hard to make might just end up in the trash, or on trash? Do they even care? How much energy, both mental and mechanical, is wasted on bringing these things to the consumer. Its astonishing.

Like Soda for Petrol

On Saturday Brad's parents came over for lunch. We make it a habit to see them at least once a month that is when they aren't out of town on a cruise. Brad's dad, Jon, is a man that has a wealth of information when it comes to the free market as he used to be a grocery store manager for many years prior to his retirement.

On this particular occasion we got on the subject of soda and how the quantity and price of the product have gone up significantly over the past twenty years. Jon recounted the days when in stores that he managed a can of Dr. Pepper at a vending machine would cost a mere five cents. Eventually the management decided to bump the price up to eight cents in an effort to turn more profit. Jon explained that many people thought that it would be a disaster and that no one would pay for their instant gratification refreshment. To his surprise, and the pleasure of executives, sales continued to be good at the new price. Apparently people were willing to pay more for their soda and as long as people were willing to pay the price kept going up. In some places these days you are are hard pressed to find a vending machine that charges fifty cents for a can of soda.

Why am I discussing this you ask? Well I believe this anecdote is a bellwether for the gas prices in this country. Even after the devastation of Katrina and Rita the oil companies in this nation have had record years for profit and yet gas prices are on the rise again. On the local news here in Dallas tonight they interviewed several a commuter and asked if they thought the prices were high enough for them to cut down on driving or consider alternate modes of transportation. All of them stated that they didn't like the prices going up but that they wouldn't alter their driving behavior.

I have no grand conclusion to this, I just thought it was an interesting parallel. In fact I want the price of gas to get higher so that hopefully these things will happen:

Increased demand for alternative fuels such as biodiesel.
The demand and production of SUVs plummets.
Suburban sprawl comes to a halt and urban revitalization gains more momentum and forces the market to produce more low to middle income high density living in urban cores in lieu of the current trend that is almost exclusively the high luxury market.

Last night was a twofold event. FIrst of all it was the 11th annual Texas Bear Round Up. Basically its a bunch of bears coming together in Dallas to meet, rub each other's shaved heads, grab one another's beefy butts, and swap commentary on various and sundry "bear" issues. The theme of this year's event was "Fur University" and so there were seminars earlier in the week on how to be a better bear, cub, otter etc.

Overall though I think the event injected some really hot beefy men to the Dallas gayborhood for the night and I actually find this sect of the gay community to be really fun.

So in addition to the hirsute bonanza Brad and I met up with someone that I have been corresponding with via My Space. The lovely and splendid Jeff aka El Gringo Loco.

Here's a picture of me and Jeff after a few drinks. Jeff is a cool cat and certainly proof that you can meet people on My Space that are not just looking to chop you up into a million pieces. He did however express his desire to preform deviant sex acts with me but I think 50% is accpetable. I look like crap in this picture but oh well.

Here I am with some Dallasites, I think. They could be Gotti children but I'm not totally certain. If I had my sunglasses on too you wouldn't have noticed my eyes are shut. Hmm note to self.

Two weekends in a row at the bar and both weekends I've met a new Jeff. I think thats enough going out though for a while. I'm not usually so out and about in the community but who knows what next weekend will bring.

Hey Adam, before I even decided I was going to Spain for spring break, I really liked your photos in Barcelona. (You're a great photographer.) Sadly, it was after I shaved so I think I look too boyish, haha.

Thanks for the article I will definately read it through and give the plight some thought.

Honestly Tony I'm so enraged when I read shit like this it takes me a while to collect my thoughts on the matter. My rage stems from the fact that I lost a brother to HIV. A beautiful man was destroyed by this virus and no one seems to get how horrible it is to see someone decay right before your eyes. It's insulting to hear about people acting so selfishly that I almost want to say "they deserve everything they get."

My rage then mutates into discouragement. The people that work in the field of immunology research, specifically at the CDC, are breaking thier asses day and night trying to keep one step ahead of this shit. When breakthroughs are made the media announces it and everyone thinks its okay to fuck like its 1970 again and I wonder why are we bothering? The same goes for when a drug hits the market and people start abusing it in the way Tenofavir is being abused, it pisses me off. Someone worked to discover that drug to save lives and there are people that are tearing that effort down nigght after night and in effect killing the people that really need it. Those that abuse Tenofavir are no different than Roy Kohn with his secret stash of AZT. People are dedicating and giving their lives, researcher, HIV patient, and laymen alike, to fight this disease I feel like the gay community at large is ungrateful. Sometimes I think there needs to be the level of death that there was in the 80s and early 90s so this generation that is coming into its own now can SEE with their own eyes what HIV does to a person.

My rage comes to me from the fact that people would rather fill their minds with fabricated human drama via the outlets of CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, ABC etc. so forth and so on. What will it take to communicate to people that HIV is still here and that there is real suffering happening in the world all around them? What will it take to make people care more about a man who has been abandoned by his friends and family that lay dying in a hospice alone than they do about a multi-millionaire white male competeing for the affections of Donald Trump?! What will it take for people to realize that if they have unprotected sex their chances of contracting HIV are higher than the chances that their guess as to who will be eliminated from American Idol will be correct?!

Once my thoughts calm down I realize that we need to keep doing what we've always been doing. Educate educate educate. Test test test. Condoms condoms condoms. That and I think those of us that are the survivors of the ones we have lost have to tell their stories no matter how greusome they may seem to others. History is bound to repeat itself if its not passed on to future generations. The events of the past, their consequences and how they came to be, need to be wholly understood. With that said maybe people need to be encouraged to be more open about the losses they've suffered. Maybe its time that we help the ghosts of those that we've lost rattle their chains a little bit louder.

...find a new bus stop. I could smell the gas seeping from this...whitchamacallit while I was standing next to it at my stop yesterday afternoon. I'm sure the splitting headache that I had last night was a result of the noxious fumes that I inhaled while waiting for my bus.

Does anybody else think that this gaspipe is relatively exposed? I don't think that three metal pillars are nearly enough protection if someone drove into this thing. I guess Atmos energy spent all their money on ~~Tom Delay~~ other community projects.

There is another bus stop down the street a bit but its near a bodega that is frequented by some unsavory characters. As long as my death isn't documented as an Honorable Mention at the Darwin Awards I'll be happy. For the most part I have no shame but if I read about a guy who died while standing at a bus stop next to an exposed gas line I'd be inclined to say that it was his poor judgement. I don't want to spend my afterlife in therapy.

Its been raining all day here in Dallas. Its actually quite fortuitous that the weather is like this because it has given me an excuse to not leave the house or get out of my pajamas today.

That hasn't stopped us from being somewhat productive. I did do some laundry and make myself breakfast. Brad cleaned downstairs and I cleaned up upstairs. This is horribly exciting news I know but I thought I should post something on here to let ya'll know that I am still alive. I know how the blogosphere is when someone neglects their blog even for a few days. Theories turn into rumors, rumors become fact, and then before you know it I'm reading about my own kidnapping and subsequent torture.

In other news, last night we saw a splendid play that I will be speaking about in my next podcast and tonight I will be meeting Jeff of Well This is Just It!"
